Ethiopia will use proportionate force to stop Eritrean government’s threats, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Tuesday.
When he presented eight-month performance report of his government to the 18th ordinary session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on Tuesday, Meles said the Eritrean government has changed its tactic and is now plotting to carry out attacks on areas where mass people gather.
He said the primary response of the Ethiopian government would be to try to persuade the government in Asmara to refrain from such attacks.
Supporting the Eritrean people in their quest for change of regime in their country will be the other option, according to Meles.
He told parliamentarians that apart from employing diplomatic and economic measures, the government of Ethiopia would proportionately respond to every attack directed against it.
Concerning recently launched Millennium dam project, Meles said one of the strategies of some Egyptian leaders was to threaten Ethiopia from building dams on the Nile.
He said his government would not be frightened and stop developmental activities on the Nile River.
According to Meles, blocking Ethiopia from getting loans and aid for projects, which will be implemented on the Nile River, was also another strategy of Egyptians leaders’ in the past. Referring to assessment made recently by an Egyptian newspaper, Meles indicated that most of new generation Egyptians support the idea of fair, equitable utilization of the Nile River.
