The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has stressed the need for media utilization and community engagement to effective counter terrorism activities in the eastern African region.
IGAD’s Capacity Building Program Against Terrorism (ICPAT), in collaboration with the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation (CGCC), convened a three day meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The meeting is part of a broader effort by ICPAT and CGCC to strengthen sub-regional cooperation and expertise in preventing terrorism in East Africa.
The conference, titled “Community Engagement to Counter Terrorism”, was intended to provide an opportunity for officials of the member states to meet with expert practitioners and obtain valuable insights on innovative programming and best practices on community engagement to counter terrorism.
It was indicated in a communiqué issued at the end of the conference that a joint package has been devised to halt terrorist activities in the region. IGAD has reached a decision to work closely with international counter terrorism institutions, the joint communiqué stated.
Eritrea remains adamant in its partnership with terrorist elements in the region, the regional bloc noted, and called on the international community to put more pressure on the Asmara regime.
Some 30 participants drawn from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda have attended the conference.
